Cannock Phoenix Swimming Club, formerly Phoenix Youth, was formed in the early 1980’s when a coach and a number of parents from a local club decided that the time had come to create a new swimming club. The club has always promoted a ‘learn to swim’ section which is led by a Head Teacher and a team of dedicated teachers and poolside helpers. This section feeds and support the competitive side of the club which is led by a Head Coach and a further team of volunteers and junior coaches.
The club is affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association West Midland Region which is the governing body for the sport of swimming in England. We are also affiliated to the Staffordshire County Swimming Association. We have many experienced and qualified teachers and coaches who receive continued training to ensure we are at the forefront of our sport.
The club is run by two distinct sets of people, the first set of people are the coaching and teaching staff who are responsible for the practical side of the club. Secondly, the committee, which is a group of approximately 12 people, are responsible for the day-to-day administration of the club. These people voluntarily take on tasks such as acting as treasurer for the club all the way down to coordinating and developing the club’s workforce. The committee is led by a chairman, all day to day administration and correspondence dealt with by the club secretary and a dedicated welfare officer to ensure the safety and welfare of the swimmers is paramount.
The competitive swimmers have achieved great success over the years, regularly reaching the finals of Staffordshire and National Swimming Leagues. The club still has a very strong team representing them in the Junior Speedo League and at Cannock Phoenix, we actively encourage swimmers to pursue long careers at both junior and senior levels with various squad sessions taking place at different pools throughout Cannock, Rugeley and Cheslyn Hay. Through its success, the club has seen a great number of its swimmers represent the Staffordshire County team and swimmers have represented Cannock Phoenix at both the National Age Group and Youth Championships.
The club supports a strong community feel and pulls together to support challenges and opportunities. The club celebrated success in pulling together to successfully win a competition run by the ASA and the prize was a day with Britain’s successful swimmer Mark Foster. This was a fantastic opportunity for the swimmers where Mark shared his experiences and knowledge with the swimmers.
